Estimated Results (per pay period)
This calculator provides estimates only and is not tax, legal or accounting advice. Federal tax uses the 2026 IRS withholding formula (Publication 15-T, Worksheet 1A) assuming a standard Form W-4 with no additional adjustments. Maine state tax uses the official 2025 withholding formula from Maine Revenue Services — Withholding Tables for Individual Income Tax (flat max std. deduction used; ME's income-phased deduction not modeled), assuming standard withholding with no additional allowances or credits. It also uses the 2026 Social Security wage base. It supports Single/MFS, Married Filing Jointly/Qualifying Surviving Spouse, Head of Household and Nonresident Alien federal filing statuses (Nonresident Alien withholding follows the IRS Notice 1392 wage-addback procedure), and calculates overtime pay at 1.5x the hourly rate. It does not account for local taxes or additional allowances/credits. Actual withholding depends on your W-4, employer payroll system and individual circumstances. Consult a tax professional or payroll provider for exact figures.

Use the Maine Paycheck Calculator to estimate take-home pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Maine income tax withholding. Maine uses graduated state withholding rates and a state-specific withholding certificate, so the calculation depends on more than a single percentage.
For 2026, Maine's percentage method uses 5.80%, 6.75% and 7.15% withholding rates after annualizing wages and applying the state withholding adjustments. Maine Revenue Services also lists a 2026 personal exemption amount of $5,300 and directs employees to use Form W-4ME for Maine withholding allowances.

How to Use the Maine Paycheck Calculator
To estimate a Maine paycheck, enter gross wages, payroll frequency and the employee information that affects federal and Maine withholding. The state calculation should follow Maine's 2026 tables or percentage method rather than applying the top state rate to every paycheck.
- Gross taxable wages
- Pay frequency
- Federal Form W-4 information
- Maine Form W-4ME information
- Number of Maine withholding allowances
- Pre-tax deductions
- Post-tax deductions
- Overtime, commissions or bonuses
- Year-to-date wages when relevant
What Federal Taxes Come Out of a Maine Paycheck?
A Maine paycheck can include federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare in addition to state income tax. Federal withholding is calculated separately from the state calculation.
Federal Income Tax Withholding
Federal income tax withholding depends on taxable wages, payroll frequency and the information on the employee's Form W-4. Employers use the IRS 2026 withholding methods rather than one flat federal percentage.

Social Security and Medicare
Social Security and Medicare are federal payroll taxes that generally apply in addition to federal and state income tax withholding.
| Payroll Tax | Employee Rate | 2026 Wage Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Social Security | 6.2% | Applies to covered wages up to $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% | Applies to covered wages with no annual wage limit |
| Additional Medicare Tax | 0.9% | Employer withholding begins after wages paid exceed $200,000 |
The employer generally matches the regular Social Security and Medicare employee portions. The Additional Medicare Tax is not matched by the employer.

How Maine Income Tax Withholding Works in 2026
Maine withholding is calculated by annualizing wages, applying Maine-specific exemption and deduction adjustments then using the state's graduated percentage schedule. Employers may also use the official wage bracket tables.
The 2026 Maine percentage method uses the following annualized withholding schedule:
| Filing Category | Annualized Income | 2026 Annualized Withholding |
|---|---|---|
| Single | Less than $27,400 | 5.80% of income |
| Single | $27,400 to less than $64,850 | $1,589 + 6.75% of excess over $27,400 |
| Single | $64,850 or more | $4,117 + 7.15% of excess over $64,850 |
| Married | Less than $54,850 | 5.80% of income |
| Married | $54,850 to less than $129,750 | $3,181 + 6.75% of excess over $54,850 |
| Married | $129,750 or more | $8,237 + 7.15% of excess over $129,750 |
These figures are part of the withholding method, not a shortcut for calculating a final Maine income tax return. The employee's allowances and applicable standard deduction adjustment affect the annualized income used in the payroll calculation.

What Is Form W-4ME?
Form W-4ME is Maine's Employee's Maine Withholding Allowance Certificate. Employers use it to determine the employee's Maine withholding allowances and related state withholding information.
Maine Revenue Services lists W-4ME with its 2026 employment tax forms. The 2026 withholding booklet states that the Maine personal exemption amount is $5,300.

Maine Withholding Does Not Simply Copy the Federal W-4
Maine withholding is related to the federal system but it does not simply duplicate every federal W-4 adjustment. Maine Revenue Services specifically warns employers not to reduce Maine withholding by federal deduction amounts entered on federal Form W-4 Step 4(b).
This distinction matters when an employee has additional federal deductions. A federal withholding change may not create the same adjustment in the Maine state calculation.

How to Estimate a Maine Paycheck
A Maine paycheck estimate should annualize wages for the state calculation then convert the resulting annual withholding back to the employee's payroll period.
- Determine taxable wages for the current pay period.
- Multiply wages by the number of annual payroll periods.
- Apply Maine withholding allowances from Form W-4ME.
- Apply the Maine withholding standard deduction adjustment.
- Use the applicable 5.80%, 6.75% or 7.15% percentage-method tier.
- Divide annualized state withholding by the number of payroll periods.
- Calculate federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare.
- Subtract other payroll deductions to estimate net pay.
Maine Hourly Paycheck Calculator
A Maine hourly paycheck estimate begins with the employee's hourly rate and the number of hours worked during the pay period.
Hourly Rate × Regular Hours = Regular Gross Pay
Add taxable overtime, commissions, bonuses or other compensation that belongs in the pay period before calculating applicable withholding and payroll deductions.
Maine Salary Paycheck Calculator
For salaried employees, gross pay per paycheck is generally calculated by dividing annual salary by the number of payroll periods in the year.
- Weekly: annual salary ÷ 52
- Biweekly: annual salary ÷ 26
- Semimonthly: annual salary ÷ 24
- Monthly: annual salary ÷ 12
Gross salary is not the same as take-home pay. Federal taxes, state withholding and other payroll deductions are applied after gross wages for the period are determined.
Gross Pay vs. Net Pay in Maine
Gross pay is compensation before payroll taxes and deductions. Net pay is the amount remaining after applicable withholding and other payroll deductions.
Gross Pay - Taxes - Payroll Deductions = Estimated Net Pay
The difference between gross and net pay in Maine can be affected by federal withholding, state income tax, pre-tax benefits, retirement contributions, insurance deductions and other payroll elections.
Why Your Maine Paycheck May Be Different
Your actual Maine paycheck may differ from a calculator estimate because withholding is sensitive to wages, filing information, state allowances and payroll deductions.
- Form W-4ME allowances
- Federal Form W-4 changes
- Pay frequency
- Bonuses or commissions
- Overtime
- Pre-tax benefit deductions
- Retirement contributions
- Payroll adjustments
- State deduction phase-outs at higher income levels
