Any overtime?

This calculator provides estimates only and is not tax, legal or accounting advice. Federal tax uses the 2026 IRS withholding formula (Publication 15-T, Worksheet 1A) assuming a standard Form W-4 with no additional adjustments. Massachusetts state tax uses the official 2026 withholding formula from Mass. DOR — Circular M (5.0% base rate; 4% surtax above ~$1.1M not modeled here), assuming standard withholding with no additional allowances or credits. It also uses the 2026 Social Security wage base. It supports Single/MFS, Married Filing Jointly/Qualifying Surviving Spouse, Head of Household and Nonresident Alien federal filing statuses (Nonresident Alien withholding follows the IRS Notice 1392 wage-addback procedure), and calculates overtime pay at 1.5x the hourly rate. It does not account for local taxes or additional allowances/credits. Actual withholding depends on your W-4, employer payroll system and individual circumstances. Consult a tax professional or payroll provider for exact figures.

A Massachusetts paycheck calculator estimates take-home pay by starting with gross wages then subtracting federal withholding, Massachusetts income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, Paid Family and Medical Leave contributions when they apply plus other employee deductions. For 2026, Massachusetts payroll uses 5.0 percent state withholding tables that also account for the state's additional 4 percent surtax in higher-income situations.

Massachusetts Payroll Has Two State-Specific Deductions to Watch

Massachusetts paycheck estimates often need to consider both state income tax withholding and the employee share of Paid Family and Medical Leave.

Massachusetts Department of Revenue Circular M uses 5.0 percent withholding tables for 2026. The percentage-method tables were updated to account for the 4 percent surtax. That does not mean every employee loses 9 percent of each paycheck to Massachusetts income tax. The withholding calculation depends on taxable wages, payroll frequency and employee withholding information.

PFML is separate from income tax. For employers with 25 or more covered individuals, the total 2026 PFML contribution is 0.88 percent of eligible wages. Up to 0.18 percent for family leave and up to 0.28 percent for medical leave can be withheld from a covered employee's wages under the 2026 contribution split.

What Information Does a Massachusetts Paycheck Calculator Need?

The calculator needs enough payroll information to determine gross pay first then apply federal, state and benefit deductions in the correct order.

InputWhy It Matters
Hourly rate or annual salaryCreates the starting compensation amount.
Pay frequencyDetermines how salary and withholding are allocated across the year.
Hours and overtimeChanges gross pay for hourly nonexempt workers.
Federal Form W-4 informationAffects federal income tax withholding.
Massachusetts Form M-4 informationSupports state withholding calculations.
Pre-tax deductionsCan reduce wages subject to one or more taxes.
PFML employee contributionCan reduce take-home pay when the employee share applies.
Post-tax deductionsReduce pay after applicable taxes are calculated.
YTD Social Security wagesMatter when the employee approaches the annual Social Security wage base.

How Massachusetts State Withholding Works in 2026

Massachusetts employers should use the 2026 Circular M withholding tables or approved withholding method rather than applying one flat percentage to gross wages.

The 2026 tables are built around the state's 5.0 percent income tax structure and updated surtax treatment. Form M-4 gives employers Massachusetts-specific withholding information. A paycheck estimate should therefore use taxable wages for the pay period plus the employee's real withholding setup.

If you need the annual tax structure, surtax treatment or filing rules rather than the payroll estimate, the Massachusetts income tax calculator and guide is the more appropriate resource.

PFML Can Change Massachusetts Net Pay

Massachusetts PFML can create an employee payroll deduction, but the amount depends on employer size and how the employer divides the contribution.

For employers with 25 or more covered individuals, the 2026 total contribution rate is 0.88 percent of eligible wages. The family leave portion is 0.18 percent and may be withheld fully from covered individuals. The medical leave portion is 0.70 percent, but only up to 40 percent of that medical contribution, equal to 0.28 percent of eligible wages, may be withheld from employees.

Employers with fewer than 25 covered individuals send an effective contribution of 0.46 percent because they do not owe the employer share of medical leave. They may still withhold the covered individual's family and medical portions. A calculator should therefore not assume the same PFML deduction for every worker.

Federal Payroll Taxes Still Apply Separately

Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare are calculated separately from Massachusetts withholding and PFML.

For 2026, Social Security is generally withheld at 6.2 percent on covered wages up to the $184,500 wage base. Medicare is generally 1.45 percent on covered wages with no general wage cap. Additional Medicare Tax withholding begins after an employer pays more than $200,000 in Medicare wages to an employee during the calendar year.

Federal income tax withholding depends on the employee's Form W-4, taxable wages and payroll frequency. Two Massachusetts employees with identical gross pay can still have different net pay because their federal elections or benefits differ.

Massachusetts Hourly, Salary and Overtime Pay

Gross pay must be correct before any payroll tax can be estimated, so hourly and salaried workers need different starting calculations.

Massachusetts minimum wage remains $15.00 per hour in 2026 for most covered workers. Applicable overtime and service-rate rules can affect gross earnings before taxes are calculated.

Pre-Tax Benefits Can Change More Than One Tax Calculation

A qualifying pre-tax deduction can reduce one or more taxable wage bases, while a post-tax deduction usually reduces the remaining pay after taxes.

Health-plan contributions, retirement contributions and other benefits can receive different tax treatment. A deduction that reduces federal taxable wages does not necessarily reduce Social Security, Medicare or Massachusetts taxable wages in the same way. A reliable calculator should classify the deduction rather than subtract every benefit from gross pay before all taxes.

A Simplified Massachusetts Take-Home Pay Formula

Massachusetts net pay can be summarized as gross pay minus federal taxes, Massachusetts withholding, PFML when applicable and other employee deductions.

Estimated Net Pay = Gross Pay - Federal Withholding - Massachusetts Withholding - Social Security - Medicare - PFML Employee Contribution, if applicable - Other Employee Deductions.

The formula shows the structure of the calculation but does not replace the official withholding tables. Taxable wages can differ from gross pay because of benefit treatment.

From Paycheck Estimate to Payroll Record

Use the calculator while the gross-to-net amount is still being estimated then use the final payroll figures to document the actual wage payment.

After payroll is finalized, the Massachusetts pay stub generator can organize real earnings, taxes and deductions into an itemized record. For a broader document workflow, the online paystub generator can be used after the payroll information has been verified.

Calculator Accuracy and Responsible Use

A paycheck calculator gives an estimate based on the wage, withholding and deduction information entered for a particular pay period.

Actual payroll can differ because of benefit elections, local taxes, supplemental wages, multiple jobs, tax credits, garnishments, special withholding instructions or payroll rounding. Employers should rely on current official guidance and their payroll records when processing wages. Online PayStub is intended for lawful payroll, business and recordkeeping use. Do not use calculator results or generated payroll records to fabricate employment, inflate income or misrepresent payment history.

Frequently Asked Questions
