New York Paystub Generator
A New York paycheck can carry three income tax lines at once: state withholding, New York City resident tax and the Yonkers surcharge, plus a separate Paid Family Leave deduction. Our generator applies each layer based on where the employee lives and works, so nothing gets folded into one blended figure.
Enter your payroll details, review the calculated result and make any changes before you download. You stay in control of every figure on the document.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Create a New York Pay Stub
See the full walkthrough for building a New York pay stub, including earnings, deductions and the final PDF.
A single paycheck written in Brooklyn can carry three income tax lines at the same time: federal, New York State and New York City resident tax. Move the same employee to Yonkers and a fourth line appears. Most stub tools give you one box marked “state tax” and stop there, which is exactly how New York payroll stubs end up missing a jurisdiction.
This New York paystub generator is built around that stack. Tell it where the employee lives and where the work is performed and it prints each layer on its own row with its own year to date column, alongside the Paid Family Leave contribution that belongs on a distinct deduction line rather than folded into a catch-all. Preview on screen, correct anything, then download the PDF.
Three Tax Layers on One New York Paystub
New York is unusual because the local layer is not one thing. It is two different taxes with two different triggers and one of them follows the employee home while the other follows the work.
The withholding stack a New York pay stub shows
Each row routes to a different authority and the state row is the one governed by New York State income tax brackets and rates.
| Layer | Who it applies to | Withholding publication | Typical stub label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | All employees | IRS Publication 15 / 15-T | FED, FIT, FWT |
| New York State income tax | Residents and nonresidents on New York source wages | NYS-50-T-NYS (1/26) | NY SWH, NY SIT |
| New York City resident tax | Employees who live in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island | NYS-50-T-NYC (1/26) | NYC RES, NYC INC |
| Yonkers resident surcharge | Employees who live in Yonkers, computed as 16.75% of net New York State tax | NYS-50-T-Y (1/26) | YNK RES, YON R |
| Yonkers nonresident earnings tax | Employees who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere, 0.50% of Yonkers earnings | NYS-50-T-Y (1/26) | YNK NR, YON NR |
Why a Nassau commuter owes no New York City tax
The dividing line that trips employers: the Department of Taxation and Finance states plainly that nonresidents of New York City are not liable for city personal income tax. A Nassau County resident who commutes to a Midtown office owes New York State tax on those wages and no city tax at all.
Yonkers taxes residents and commuters differently
Resident surcharge, 16.75% of net state tax
For a Yonkers resident, Publication NYS-50-T-Y builds the surcharge on net New York State tax rather than on gross wages. It prints as YNK RES with its own year to date column.
Nonresident earnings tax, 0.50% of Yonkers wages
Yonkers works the opposite way from New York City for nonresidents, because its earnings tax reaches wages earned inside the city regardless of where the worker sleeps. The rate is 0.50% of those earnings, labeled YNK NR.
Set Residence and Work City First
Every downstream number depends on two location fields, so when you start a paystub the generator asks for them before anything else.
Copy the withholding certificate the employee filed
Form IT-2104, withholding allowance certificate
The Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate is where an employee declares New York State, New York City and Yonkers withholding status. If your worker filed one, copy the jurisdiction boxes across before you touch gross pay.
Form IT-2104.1, certificate of nonresidence
The Certificate of Nonresidence and Allocation of Withholding Tax is the form a nonresident uses to certify that city withholding should not apply and to allocate wages. Keep it on file. It is the document that explains a missing NYC RES line if anyone ever asks.
Work address is a separate field from home
An employee living in New Rochelle who works at a warehouse inside Yonkers city limits needs the nonresident earnings line and no resident surcharge. Reverse those fields and the stub is wrong in both directions.
Paid Family Leave Gets Its Own Deduction Line
New York funds Paid Family Leave through an employee payroll contribution, which is why it appears as a deduction and not as an employer cost buried in overhead.
What is the 2026 New York PFL rate?
For 2026 the Workers’ Compensation Board set the contribution at 0.432% of gross wages per pay period, capped at $411.91 for the year. The rate is applied against the New York State Average Weekly Wage of $1,833.63 and the maximum weekly benefit is $1,228.53.
How disability benefits differ from PFL
Statutory disability benefits under the Disability Benefits Law are separate money. An employer may deduct one half of one percent of wages toward that coverage, but no more than 60 cents a week. Two deductions, two programs, two lines.
When the PFL line stops for the year
The generator keeps the programs apart and stops PFL once the annual cap is reached, which matters above roughly $95,000 a year.
Worked Example: A Regular Biweekly Paycheck
Here is a full biweekly stub for an employee earning $39.00 an hour, with 80 regular hours and no overtime for the period.
| Earnings | Hours | Rate | Current | YTD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | 80.00 | $39.00 | $3,120.00 | $59,280.00 |
| Gross pay | 80.00 | $3,120.00 | $59,280.00 |
| Deductions | Current | YTD |
|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | $346.85 | $6,588.90 |
| Social Security (6.2%) | $193.44 | $3,675.36 |
| Medicare (1.45%) | $45.24 | $859.56 |
| NY SDI | $1.20 | $22.80 |
| NY PFL (0.432%) | $13.48 | $256.09 |
| New York State income tax | $146.71 | $2,788.82 |
| Total deductions | $746.92 | $14,191.53 |
| Net pay | $2,373.08 | $45,088.47 |
This employee lives outside New York City and Yonkers, so the statement carries state withholding, SDI and PFL only, with no city or Yonkers line. Federal withholding depends on the employee's W-4, so treat that line as illustrative.
Worked Example: a $6,000 Bonus in Yonkers
Supplemental wages paid separately from regular pay show all three layers at once, because each authority publishes a flat rate for them. Take a $6,000 bonus paid in 2026 to a warehouse supervisor who lives in Yonkers, has already been paid this week and sits well below the Social Security wage base of $184,500.
Supplemental rates, line by line
| Line | Rate | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gross supplemental wages | $6,000.00 | |
| Federal income tax withheld | 22.00% | $1,320.00 |
| New York State income tax | 11.70% | $702.00 |
| Yonkers resident surcharge | 1.95975% | $117.59 |
| Social Security (OASDI) | 6.20% | $372.00 |
| Medicare | 1.45% | $87.00 |
| NY Paid Family Leave | 0.432% | $25.92 |
| Net pay | $3,375.49 |
Total withheld is $2,624.51. For a regular payroll run, estimate New York take home pay before you build the stub.
Why the Yonkers line lands on 1.95975%
That figure is not a percentage of the bonus in any direct sense but a surcharge sitting on the state tax, which is why 1.95975% is what 16.75% of the state supplemental rate works out to.
Two edits that rewrite the same document
Change one field and the arithmetic above stops applying.
Move the address to Astoria, Queens
The $117.59 disappears, replaced by a New York City resident line at the city’s own 4.25% supplemental rate. Same gross, different document.
Cross $200,000 in year to date wages
If the same worker earns above $200,000 in the calendar year, a 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax line appears on later stubs as well. That is a federal line, employee only, with no employer match.
Where Each Check Stub Line Sends the Money
The mapping below is the part a generic tool cannot do for New York, because the same dollar routes to three different treasuries depending on two address fields.
Field, printed label and receiving authority
| What you enter | What prints on the check stub | Who receives it |
|---|---|---|
| Home address inside the five boroughs | NYC RES with its own YTD column | New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, on behalf of New York City |
| Home address in Yonkers | YNK RES, calculated off the state tax figure | Department of Taxation and Finance, on behalf of Yonkers |
| Work location in Yonkers, home elsewhere | YNK NR at 0.50% of Yonkers wages | Department of Taxation and Finance, on behalf of Yonkers |
| Any New York work location | NY SWH or NY SIT | New York State Department of Taxation and Finance |
| Gross wages, any New York employer | NY PFL at 0.432%, capped | The employer’s PFL insurance carrier |
| Gross wages, any covered employer | NY DBL, capped at 60 cents weekly | The employer’s disability carrier |
| Tip credit taken for a food service worker | Allowance line, shown separately from wages | Nobody, it is a credit against the minimum wage and must be disclosed |
The tip allowance row is a disclosure, not a tax
Allowances claimed toward the minimum wage must be itemized on the statement, a rule set by the New York wage statement requirements under Labor Law 195(3) and not by any tax publication.
Who in New York Builds a Payroll Stub
Employers running weekly hourly crews
- Home care and staffing agencies in the Bronx and Queens, where payroll runs weekly and the statement must show a regular rate, an overtime rate and both hour counts.
- Long Island landscaping, roofing and construction outfits in Nassau and Suffolk, paying laborers weekly and needing a printable record per crew member.
- Restaurants across the Hudson Valley and the Capital Region taking a tip credit, where the cash wage and the credit both have to appear.
Household employers and owner operators
- Westchester household employers paying a nanny or home aide on the books, with no payroll department and one clean document needed per pay date.
- Freelancers and single member LLCs in Brooklyn’s production and design trades who pay themselves and want a consistent monthly payroll stub.
Payrolls that straddle the Yonkers city line
Yonkers and Mount Vernon employers whose staff cross that boundary need two local treatments on one payroll.
Errors That Show Up on New York Paycheck Stubs
Local tax charged to the wrong person
City tax withheld from a commuter
Withholding NYC resident tax from someone who lives in Hempstead or Stamford. City tax follows residence, not the office.
A missing Yonkers nonresident line
Employers routinely handle the resident surcharge and forget the 0.50% earnings tax on nonresidents working in Yonkers.
Employer taxes pushed into the deduction column
The MTA payroll tax taken from a worker
The metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax is imposed on employer payroll expense in the MCTD: Zone 1 (New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond) and Zone 2 (Rockland, Nassau, Suffolk, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester). Employers below $312,500 of quarterly MCTD payroll expense owe nothing. It never belongs in the employee deduction column.
Unemployment insurance shown as a deduction
New York UI contributions are charged to the employer account; employees do not fund it.
Lines that print but cannot be checked
PFL swept into misc or other
It is a named statutory contribution with a published rate and cap. Give it a labeled row.
One hours figure where New York wants four
For a non exempt employee New York wants the regular rate, the overtime rate, regular hours and overtime hours as four values.
Using This New York Paystub Tool Honestly
This generator exists to turn payroll numbers you already have into a document that is readable and complete. Enter hours that were actually worked, rates that were actually agreed and deductions that were actually taken. A stub produced here is a record of a payment, not a substitute for making one. If you are an employee and your stub is missing a jurisdiction or a rate, the fix is to ask your employer for a corrected statement or contact the New York State Department of Labor, not to reissue the document yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions About New York Paystubs
Does my New York paystub show NYC tax if I live in New Jersey?
No. The Department of Taxation and Finance states that nonresidents of New York City are not liable for New York City personal income tax. Your stub carries federal and New York State withholding on the New York source wages, with no NYC resident line. Keep Form IT-2104.1 on file to document the allocation. Cross river employers can also use the New Jersey paystub generator.
How do I show Yonkers tax for a worker who lives in Mount Vernon?
Use the nonresident earnings tax, not the resident surcharge: 0.50% of the wages earned in Yonkers, per Publication NYS-50-T-Y. Set the work location to Yonkers and the home address to Mount Vernon and the line prints as a nonresident item.
Should Paid Family Leave appear as a deduction or as an employer cost?
As an employee deduction. The Workers’ Compensation Board set the 2026 employee contribution at 0.432% of gross wages per pay period with a $411.91 annual maximum, so it belongs in the deduction column with its own label and its own year to date total.
Can I generate a New York paycheck stub for a 1099 contractor?
You can produce a payment record, but treat it honestly. An independent contractor has no federal or New York withholding, no PFL contribution and no disability deduction, so the document shows gross payment and any agreed offsets only. Never print tax lines that were not withheld.
What do I enter for a restaurant server paid the tipped cash wage?
Enter the cash wage actually paid and record the tip credit as a separate allowance line rather than inflating the hourly rate. New York requires allowances claimed toward the minimum wage to be itemized and the 2026 food service figures differ between the downstate counties and the rest of the state.
Does the tool handle a weekly pay period for a construction laborer?
Yes and for most New York manual workers weekly is the required frequency under Labor Law 191. Set it to weekly so the period dates, hours and year to date columns line up with how the crew is actually paid.
Is the MTA payroll tax deducted from my employee’s check stub?
No. The metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax is a tax on employer payroll expense within the MCTD, with a quarterly threshold of $312,500 in MCTD payroll expense before any liability arises. It is reported by the employer and should never appear as an employee deduction.
