Why Arizona Employers and Workers Use Online Paystub

Arizona payroll has a short list of state rules and each one shows up on the pay stub. The state income tax is a flat 2.5 percent, but the amount withheld follows the percentage the employee picked on Form A-4, so the stub has to carry that election rather than a generic rate. Employees pay nothing toward unemployment insurance and there is no state disability or family leave tax, which leaves four tax lines: federal income tax, Arizona state tax, Social Security and Medicare. Wages must be paid at least twice a month, every deduction must be itemized with the employee's written consent and earned paid sick time balances need to be reported each pay period. Online Paystub was set up around exactly these points. Choose Arizona as the work state, enter the A-4 percentage, hours and pay rate and the generator builds an earnings statement that a Phoenix leasing office, a Tucson credit union or a small business owner in Mesa can check line by line. Preview the full document at no cost, adjust anything that is off and download the PDF as proof of income or as a payroll record.

How Does Our Arizona Paystub Maker Work?

  1. Arizona pay stub preview with the company and employee information section highlighted

    Enter Company and Employee Information

Begin with the employer's name, address and EIN. Add the employee or contractor: name, address, the last four digits of the Social Security number and the pay rate. Hourly, salaried and tipped pay are all supported, so the same form works for a Scottsdale restaurant server, a Chandler warehouse associate and a salaried office manager in Phoenix.

  2. Arizona pay stub preview with the earnings and deductions section highlighted, including Arizona state tax withholding

Set the Arizona Withholding Percentage From Form A-4

Arizona does not withhold a fixed rate. Each employee chooses a percentage of gross taxable wages on Form A-4 and that percentage is what belongs on the stub. Pick the elected rate from the list (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 or 3.5 percent), add any extra dollar amount the employee requested, or mark the employee exempt if they filed for it. If no A-4 is on file, the state default applies and the generator uses it.

  3. Preview Your Arizona Pay Stub and Download the PDF

The completed earnings statement appears on screen before you pay anything. Read the state withholding line, the federal lines, the sick time block and the net pay. Edit whatever needs editing, then download the PDF. It prints cleanly and reads clearly on a phone, which is what a leasing office in Tempe or a credit union loan officer will actually look at.

A Paystub Generator Built for Arizona Payroll

Arizona payroll is lighter than most states, but the few state rules that exist are exactly the ones generic stub tools get wrong.

Flat 2.5% Income Tax, but the Stub Shows Your A-4 Election

Since 2023 Arizona has taxed individual income at a single 2.5 percent rate. That does not mean 2.5 percent is withheld from every paycheck. Withholding is set by the employee on Form A-4 and many people choose a higher or lower percentage to match their expected year-end liability. A stub that shows 2.5 percent for an employee who elected 3.0 percent on their A-4 will not match the W-2 at year end. The generator withholds at the elected percentage, which is the figure the Arizona Department of Revenue reconciles against.

No Employee Unemployment or Disability Deductions in Arizona

Arizona unemployment insurance is funded entirely by employer contributions to the Department of Economic Security. Employees pay nothing toward it and there is no state disability insurance or paid family leave payroll tax. The employee deductions block on an Arizona stub therefore contains four lines at most: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Arizona state income tax, followed by any voluntary deductions the employee authorized in writing.

Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Flagstaff and Every Arizona Employer

State income tax rules are identical across Arizona; there are no city or county income taxes. Minimum wage is where location matters. Flagstaff sets its own rate well above the state figure and Tucson has adopted a local minimum wage ordinance as well. The generator applies the pay rate you enter, so employers in those cities should confirm the rate meets the local floor before creating the stub.

Arizona Pay Stub Requirements in 2026

What Arizona Law Actually Requires on a Wage Statement

Arizona does not have a standalone pay stub statute like California or New York. What it has is a set of overlapping obligations: wage payment law requires employers to pay on time and to itemize any deduction taken from wages, the Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act requires earned paid sick time information to be shown to the employee each pay period and federal FLSA recordkeeping requires accurate records of hours, rates and wages. Taken together, the practical standard is a written or electronic statement each payday showing:

  • Employer name and address
  • Employee name
  • Pay period dates and pay date
  • Rate of pay and hours worked for hourly employees
  • Gross wages
  • Each deduction listed separately with its amount
  • Net pay
  • Earned paid sick time available, used and paid

Employers must keep these payroll records for four years under the Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act.

Earned Paid Sick Time Must Appear on the Pay Stub

Every Arizona employee accrues at least one hour of earned paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, up to 24 hours per year at employers with fewer than 15 employees and 40 hours per year at larger employers. The law requires the employer to show, on the paycheck or an attachment to it, the amount of sick time available, the amount used so far in the year and the amount paid as sick time. This is the single most common omission on Arizona stubs built with out-of-state templates. The generator includes a sick time block so the statement is complete.

Pay at Least Twice a Month, No More Than 16 Days Apart

Arizona employers must pay wages on at least two fixed paydays each month, no more than 16 days apart. Semimonthly and biweekly schedules both satisfy the rule; monthly pay does not, except for certain out-of-state employers and exempt staff who agree to it. Final wages after termination are due within seven working days or by the next regular payday, whichever comes first, so a final stub often has to be produced off-cycle.

Itemized Deductions and Written Authorization

Beyond taxes and court-ordered garnishments, an Arizona employer may only deduct from wages with the employee's written authorization and the deduction must be shown on the statement. Health insurance premiums, 401(k) contributions and uniform costs all fall in this category. Listing them as a single "other" line does not meet the itemization standard; each one gets its own row.

Arizona Minimum Wage and Overtime Rules on Your Paystub

Statewide Minimum Wage $15.15 and Tipped Wage $12.15 (2026)

Arizona's minimum wage adjusts every January with inflation and stands at $15.15 per hour for 2026. Employers may pay tipped employees up to $3.00 less, or $12.15 per hour, provided tips bring the employee to at least $15.15 for the pay period. When a tipped rate is used, the stub should show the cash wage, reported tips and the combined figure so the minimum wage test can be verified.

Flagstaff and Tucson Local Minimum Wage

Flagstaff's minimum wage is $18.35 per hour in 2026 and the city does not allow a tip credit, so a Flagstaff server's cash wage must be the full amount. Tucson enforces its own minimum wage ordinance with annual adjustments. A stub for an employee working in either city should reflect the local rate and employers with staff in multiple locations should set the rate per employee rather than per company.

Overtime Follows the Federal 40-Hour Rule

Arizona has no state overtime statute, so the federal FLSA standard applies: one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime threshold, which means a 10-hour shift earns no overtime unless the week passes 40 hours. Overtime should still appear on its own line at the premium rate; folding it into regular hours makes the stub impossible to audit.

Arizona State Income Tax Withholding (Form A-4 Percentages)

The state withholding line equals gross taxable wages for the period multiplied by the employee's A-4 percentage, plus any additional flat amount they requested. Employees who expect no Arizona tax liability can claim exemption on the A-4, in which case the line reads zero. A new hire who has not returned an A-4 is withheld at the state default rate until the form arrives.

Federal Income Tax Withholding (Form W-4)

Federal withholding is driven by the W-4: filing status, dependents, other income and extra withholding. Two Arizona employees earning the same wages can show very different federal lines. This figure comes out of the payroll calculation for the pay period, not from a flat percentage.

Social Security and Medicare (FICA)

Social Security is withheld at 6.2 percent of covered wages until the employee reaches the annual wage base the IRS sets each year. Medicare is withheld at 1.45 percent with no cap, plus an additional 0.9 percent on wages above $200,000 in a calendar year. The employer pays a matching share on its own side, which does not appear as an employee deduction.

Gross Pay, Deductions and Net Pay Formula

Every Arizona stub reduces to one line of arithmetic:

Gross earnings (regular pay + overtime + tips or other earnings) minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Arizona withholding at the A-4 rate and authorized voluntary deductions equals net pay.

If the net figure cannot be rebuilt from the rows above it, the stub has an error.

Sample Arizona Paystub Generator Output

Below is an actual preview produced by the generator for an Arizona employee. This is the earnings statement you see on screen before downloading; the final PDF fills in every current deduction amount.

Sample Arizona pay stub for a biweekly employee in Payson with 2.0 percent A-4 withholding and $1,650.85 net pay

Scenario: Alexander Calwell, hourly employee of a company based in Payson, Arizona, filing status single, paid biweekly by check. Pay period Aug 28 to Sep 10, 2026, pay day Sep 15, 2026. Regular rate $25.00, 80 hours, no overtime this period. Arizona withholding elected at 2.0 percent on Form A-4. This is the 19th paycheck of the year.

Sample Arizona pay stub for a biweekly hourly employee in Payson, pay period Aug 28 to Sep 10, 2026
LineRateHoursCurrentYear to Date

Taxes / deductions$349.15$6,633.85
Net pay (net check amount)$1,650.85$31,366.15

Reading the statement:

  • Header block. Pay period, pay day, employer name and address, employee name and a masked SSN showing only the last four digits. The payment information panel adds net pay, distribution type (check here, direct deposit is the alternative) and the federal filing status used for withholding.
  • Arizona state tax is 2.0 percent, not 2.5. $2,000 x 2.0% = $40.00. The employee chose 2.0 on Form A-4; the flat 2.5 percent rate is settled on the annual return, while the stub shows what was actually withheld each period. An employee who elected 3.0 percent would show $60.00 on the same wages.
  • Only four tax lines. Federal income tax, Arizona state tax, Medicare and Social Security. There is no unemployment, disability or family leave deduction because Arizona employees do not pay any. A fifth state line on an Arizona stub usually means the wrong state template was used.
  • FICA is flat and predictable. $2,000 x 1.45% = $29.00 and $2,000 x 6.2% = $124.00. Every YTD figure is exactly 19 times the current amount, including the federal line ($156.15 x 19 = $2,966.85). When those multiples break on a stub, a number was edited by hand.
  • Federal income tax is the only line that varies by person. $156.15 reflects a single filer with no dependents at a $52,000 annual pace. A married employee on the same wages would show a lower figure.
  • The summary reconciles. Gross $2,000.00 minus taxes and deductions $349.15 equals net pay $1,650.85 and the YTD row does the same: $38,000.00 minus $6,633.85 equals $31,366.15. Net check amount equals net pay because there are no voluntary deductions or partial direct deposits.

This compact template shows wages and taxes. Earned paid sick time balances, which Arizona requires employers to report each pay period, can be shown on the detailed template or provided as an attachment to the paycheck.

To create a stub like this one, enter the pay rate and hours, select Arizona as the work state, set the A-4 percentage and filing status and the generator completes the tax lines and the summary.

Who Uses an Arizona Paystub Generator?

Employees Who Need Proof of Income for Rentals and Loans

Phoenix and Tucson are two of the fastest-growing rental markets in the country and leasing offices routinely require the last two or three pay stubs with an application. Auto lenders and mortgage underwriters ask for the same. If your employer pays by direct deposit and offers no printed statement, or a stub was lost, the generator rebuilds it from your real payroll figures. Use the numbers from your payroll portal or most recent W-2 so the document matches what your employer reports.

Small Business Owners Running Arizona Payroll

A landscaping crew in Mesa, a dental office in Gilbert or a food truck in Tucson often runs payroll from a spreadsheet. The wage calculation is usually right; the statement handed to the employee is where problems appear: no sick time balance, deductions lumped together, a state tax rate that ignores the A-4. The generator turns finished payroll numbers into a statement that satisfies Arizona's itemization and sick time rules without a payroll subscription.

Independent Contractors and Self-Employed Workers

Rideshare drivers, freelance designers, real estate agents and construction subcontractors are paid without withholding and should document income accordingly. The contractor option produces a payment statement with no tax lines, which is the accurate record of 1099 income. It should not be formatted to look like a W-2 employee stub.

Arizona Paycheck vs. Pay Stub: What Is the Difference?

The paycheck is the money, delivered as a paper check, direct deposit or payroll card. The pay stub, also called a check stub, paycheck stub, payroll stub or earnings statement, is the record that explains the money: hours, rate, gross wages, each deduction and the resulting net pay. Arizona's rules on itemized deductions and sick time reporting are about the statement, not the payment. An employer can pay every dollar correctly and still fall short by not giving the employee the breakdown.

Current Pay and Year-to-Date (YTD) Earnings on Arizona Pay Stubs

Current columns show one pay period; YTD columns accumulate from January 1. Employees use the current column to check this paycheck. Lenders read YTD to project annual income. Payroll staff track YTD Social Security wages against the annual wage base and YTD sick time hours against the 24- or 40-hour accrual cap. Keep the two columns separate and labeled and pull YTD figures from real records rather than estimating them.

Estimate Take-Home Pay With the Arizona Paycheck Calculator

If you know the gross wage but not the deductions, start with the Arizona paycheck calculator. Enter gross pay, pay frequency, W-4 details and your A-4 percentage to estimate federal and state withholding and net pay. Then carry those figures into the paystub generator to produce the document. The calculator answers "how much will I take home"; the generator records the answer.

Choose an Arizona Pay Stub Template and Create Your Document

Several layouts are available, from a compact single-page format to a detailed statement with separate earnings and deductions blocks, full YTD columns and a sick time summary. Choose the one closest to what your employer, landlord or lender is used to seeing. Every template carries the Arizona-specific lines described on this page.

Create Your Arizona Paystub

A pay stub records wages that were actually earned and paid. Use the generator to document real payroll, replace a lost statement with matching figures or give employees the itemized record Arizona expects. Do not use it to invent employment, inflate income for a rental or loan application or change earnings after the fact. Lenders verify stubs against bank deposits and employer records and falsifying income documents can carry criminal penalties in Arizona and under federal law. You are responsible for every figure you enter.

Arizona Paystub Generator FAQ

Does Arizona require employers to provide pay stubs?

Arizona has no single pay stub statute, but employers must itemize any deduction taken from wages and must show earned paid sick time balances to employees each pay period. In practice that means a written or electronic wage statement every payday.

What is the Arizona state income tax rate on a paycheck?

Arizona's income tax is a flat 2.5 percent, but paycheck withholding uses the percentage the employee elected on Form A-4, which can range from 0.5 to 3.5 percent. The two are reconciled when the annual return is filed.

Why does my Arizona pay stub show a different percentage than 2.5%?

Because withholding follows your A-4 election, not the tax rate. If you chose 2.0 percent to reduce withholding or 3.0 percent to avoid a balance due, that is the figure on your stub. You can change it by filing a new A-4 with your employer.

What happens if an employee never filed Form A-4?

The employer withholds at the state default percentage until the employee returns a completed A-4. The generator applies the default when no election is entered.

Does earned paid sick time have to be on an Arizona pay stub?

Yes. The Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act requires employers to show the sick time available, the amount used in the year and the amount paid as sick time, either on the paycheck or on an attached statement.

Is there daily overtime in Arizona?

No. Arizona follows the federal rule: overtime is owed only for hours over 40 in a workweek. Long single-day shifts do not trigger overtime on their own.

Can I create an Arizona pay stub online for proof of income?

Yes. Enter your actual pay data and A-4 percentage, select Arizona as the work state and download the statement for rental applications, auto loans or mortgage files. Lenders verify the figures against employer records, so use real numbers.

Can contractors use an Arizona paystub generator?

Yes, using the contractor option. The result is a payment statement with no withholding, which correctly represents 1099 income and should not be presented as an employee stub.

Is there a free Arizona paystub generator preview?

Yes. Build the stub and view the full preview at no charge. Payment is only required to download the finished PDF.
