South Dakota Paystub Generator
South Dakota takes nothing from a paycheck for state income tax, so a correct stub here is short: gross pay, federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and net pay. Short does not mean careless. Lenders and landlords read every line and the federal math still has to be right. This South Dakota paystub generator builds that statement for Sioux Falls, Rapid City or a farm outside Aberdeen, with year-to-date totals that add up.

Built for a State Where Only Federal Lines Apply
Generic templates often add a state withholding row because most states need one. On a South Dakota pay stub that row is wrong and an unexplained blank line makes a reader wonder what was left out.
Online Paystub drops the state line automatically once South Dakota is the work state. Enter the rate, hours and pay dates, preview the result for free and download the PDF when every figure matches your payroll records.
Short answer
A 2026 South Dakota pay stub shows gross pay, federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and net pay. There is no state or local income tax to withhold and the state reemployment tax is paid by the employer, never deducted from wages.
Why a Sioux Falls Paycheck Has Only Three Tax Lines
South Dakota has no personal income tax and no city or county wage tax. The Department of Revenue collects sales, use and excise taxes instead, which means an employer has nothing to withhold for the state and there is no state version of the W-4. Every South Dakota pay stub therefore carries the same three tax deductions as long as no voluntary benefits are involved.
Kayla Brandt, biweekly, $24.00 an hour
Social Security stops once wages reach $184,500 for 2026. Medicare never stops and rises by 0.9% on wages above $200,000.
What the Law Requires on the Statement and What Is Simply Smart
Required somewhere in the records
- Hours worked each workweek for hourly staff
- Regular rate and overtime earnings
- Each deduction and the total wages paid
- Payday and the pay period covered
Worth printing on every stub
- Year-to-date gross and net totals
- Employer name and address
- Last four digits of the SSN only
- Pay frequency and check or deposit number
Because there is no state format to follow, consistency matters. A south dakota check stub that looks the same every payday is much easier for a bank to verify than a different layout each month.

$11.85 an Hour and the $5.925 Tipped Cash Wage
The state minimum wage is indexed every January. It rose from $11.50 to $11.85 on January 1, 2026 under SDCL 60-11-3.2, according to the Department of Labor and Regulation minimum wage notice.
- Standard minimum
- $11.85 per hour
- Tipped cash wage
- $5.925 per hour
- Weekly floor at 40 hours
- $474.00
- Biweekly floor at 80 hours
- $948.00
A tipped employee's wages plus tips must reach $11.85 for every hour. If they fall short, the employer pays the difference and the stub should show it as wages, not as a tip line.
Big Sioux Ag Equipment Sample: Gross to Net in Four Lines

Scenario: Kayla Brandt works for Big Sioux Ag Equipment at 200 N Phillips Ave in Sioux Falls. She earns $24.00 an hour, works 80 hours in the biweekly period from September 7 to September 20, 2026 and is paid on September 25. She files single with no extra adjustments. This is her 21st paycheck of the year.
| Line | Current | Year to date |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $1,920.00 | $40,320.00 |
| Federal income tax | $146.55 | $3,077.55 |
| Medicare | $27.84 | $584.64 |
| Social Security | $119.04 | $2,499.84 |
| Total deductions | $293.43 | $6,162.03 |
| Net pay | $1,626.57 | $34,157.97 |
No state line was computed because none applies. Federal tax comes from the 2026 percentage method in IRS Publication 15-T and the two FICA lines are flat percentages of gross pay. If you want to compare layouts first, this guide shows what a pay stub looks like line by line.
Monthly Paydays and the Return-of-Property Rule
SDCL 60-11-9 requires wages at least once each calendar month or on regular paydays the employer sets in advance. Most Sioux Falls and Rapid City employers pay weekly or biweekly anyway, which also keeps overtime easy to track.
- Last day worked
The employee is fired or quits; the rule is the same for both under SDCL 60-11-10 and 60-11-11.
- Property returned
Keys, tools, uniforms or a vehicle go back to the employer.
- Next regular payday
Final wages are due on the next scheduled payday or once property is returned if that happens later.
Reemployment Tax Belongs to the Employer
South Dakota's reemployment assistance tax is charged on the first $15,000 of each worker's wages. New employers pay 1.2% and from 2026 every experience-rated employer also pays a 0.08% administrative fee. Neither amount is taken from the employee, so neither belongs among the deductions on a stub. If an employer chooses to show it, it goes in a separate employer-taxes box.
Harvest Crews, Contract Work and Rental Applications
Seasonal farm hands paid as employees get a regular stub. Custom operators and other independent contractors are paid on invoices and receive a 1099-NEC if they are paid $2,000 or more in 2026; the guide on creating pay stubs for independent contractors explains how a contractor statement differs, since no tax is withheld.
Workers renting in Sioux Falls are usually asked for two or three recent stubs. A clear south dakota pay stub with matching year-to-date totals is the document leasing offices check first; see what landlords accept as proof of income for an apartment.

Accurate Records Only
Do
- Use real hours, real rates and the actual pay dates
- Keep each stub consistent with deposits and the W-2
- Correct a mistake with a new stub for the same period
Never
- Invent income for a loan or a lease
- Add a state tax line that South Dakota does not have
- Show employer taxes as employee deductions
A pay stub is a record of pay that was actually earned. Creating one with false figures to mislead a lender, landlord or agency is fraud. Use the south dakota paystub generator only for payroll that really happened.

South Dakota Jobs Next to Taxing States
South Dakota has no state income tax, so its stubs carry federal lines only. Several neighbors tax the wages earned inside their borders.
- Sioux Falls employers with staff working in Luverne or Worthington owe Minnesota tax and Paid Leave premiums on that work. Use the Minnesota paystub generator.
- North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes border Sioux City. Jobs on the Iowa side need Iowa withholding from the Iowa paystub generator.
- Yankton area workers with jobs in Nebraska pay Nebraska tax with Form W-4N; see the Nebraska paystub generator.
