New Jersey Paystub Generator
A New Jersey earnings statement carries more state lines than almost any other. Beyond Gross Income Tax withheld under Form NJ-W4, workers pay three separate contributions in 2026: 0.425% for unemployment and workforce funds, 0.19% for Temporary Disability Insurance and 0.23% for Family Leave Insurance. Each stops at its own wage cap, so the lines change as the year goes on. This New Jersey paystub generator tracks those caps check by check for Hackensack, Newark and Trenton employers alike.

Four State Lines That Move on Their Own Schedules
On a New Jersey pay stub the state tax line depends on the rate table the employee picked on the NJ-W4, while the three contribution lines depend on year-to-date wages. Unemployment stops once wages reach $44,800. Disability and family leave keep going until $171,100. A stub that shows the same contribution amounts in December as in January is usually wrong.
The New Jersey check stub generator at Online Paystub calculates each line with current and year-to-date columns at weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly frequency. Enter the hours and rate, preview for free and download the PDF once the figures match your payroll register.

Gross Income Tax Brackets Behind the Garden State Line
New Jersey's Gross Income Tax rates have been unchanged since 2020 and still apply for 2026. The return schedules range from 1.4% to 10.75%:
| Taxable income | Single or married filing separately | Married joint, head of household or surviving partner |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $20,000 | 1.4% | 1.4% |
| $20,000 to $35,000 | 1.75% | 1.75% |
| $35,000 to $40,000 | 3.5% | 1.75% |
| $40,000 to $50,000 | 5.525% | 1.75% |
| $50,000 to $70,000 | 5.525% | 2.45% |
| $70,000 to $75,000 | 5.525% | 3.5% |
| $75,000 to $80,000 | 6.37% | 3.5% |
| $80,000 to $150,000 | 6.37% | 5.525% |
| $150,000 to $500,000 | 6.37% | 6.37% |
| $500,000 to $1,000,000 | 8.97% | 8.97% |
| Over $1,000,000 | 10.75% | 10.75% |
Paycheck withholding uses separate tables that run from 1.5% to 11.8%. They are built to approximate the annual tax, so a correct stub rarely matches the return schedule to the penny.

Picking Rate A Through E on Form NJ-W4
New Jersey does not use the federal W-4 for state withholding because it cannot carry state allowances. Employees complete the Form NJ-W4 instead. The filing status box decides the default table:
- Rate A: single or married/civil union partner filing separately.
- Rate B: married/civil union couple filing jointly, head of household or qualifying widow(er) when Line 3 is left blank.
- Rates C, D and E: chosen from the wage chart on the form when spouses both work or a person holds more than one job.
- Allowances: each one removes $1,000 of annual wages ($38.40 per biweekly check).
- Exempt: allowed only under the income limits on the form and must be renewed every year.
Bonuses paid separately from regular wages are withheld without the employee's allowances. Paid-out sick or vacation time is treated the same way.
UI, TDI and FLI: Three Worker Contributions With Two Caps
| Contribution | Worker rate | 2026 wage cap | Most withheld in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unemployment (UI 0.3825% plus WF/SWF 0.0425%) | 0.425% | $44,800 | $190.40 |
| Temporary Disability Insurance | 0.19% | $171,100 | $325.09 |
| Family Leave Insurance | 0.23% | $171,100 | $393.53 |
The unemployment cap is shared with employers, who also pay TDI on the first $44,800. Family Leave Insurance is funded entirely by workers. The New Jersey Department of Labor posts the current contribution rates and wage bases each year; 2027 caps are already set at $46,400 and $177,100.
Sample Output: Biweekly Cabinetmaker Pay in Hackensack
Here is a real preview from the generator. The four state lines are highlighted.

Scenario: hourly employee of Garden State Cabinetry LLC, 75 Main St, Hackensack, NJ 07601, paid biweekly. Pay period Sep 14 to Sep 27, 2026, pay date Sep 29, 2026. $30.00 an hour for 80 hours, filing single on the NJ-W4 (Rate A) with no allowances. This is the 20th paycheck of the year.
| Line | Current | Year to date |
|---|---|---|
| Regular pay (80 hours at $30.00) | $2,400.00 | $48,000.00 |
| Federal income tax | $204.15 | $4,083.00 |
| New Jersey state tax | $83.13 | $1,662.60 |
| NJ SDI (TDI, 0.19%) | $4.56 | $91.20 |
| NJ FLI (0.23%) | $5.52 | $110.40 |
| NJ SUI (UI plus WF/SWF, 0.425%) | $0.00 | $190.40 |
| Medicare (1.45%) | $34.80 | $696.00 |
| Social Security (6.2%) | $148.80 | $2,976.00 |
| Net pay | $1,919.04 | $38,190.40 |
The state tax line annualizes the check: $2,400 × 26 = $62,400. On the Rate A annual table that is $300 on the first $20,000, $300 on the next $15,000, $195 on the next $5,000 and 6.1% of the $22,400 above $40,000 ($1,366.40). The total of $2,161.40 divided by 26 gives $83.13.
The $0.00 SUI line is correct. Year-to-date wages crossed $44,800 on the 19th check, so the worker has already paid the full $190.40 (0.425% × $44,800) and nothing more is due this year. TDI ($2,400 × 0.19% = $4.56) and FLI ($2,400 × 0.23% = $5.52) continue until wages reach $171,100. A New Jersey pay stub that still shows unemployment withholding after the cap would overstate deductions.
What N.J.S.A. 34:11-4.6 Requires on the Statement
Every New Jersey employer must give each employee a statement of deductions for every pay period in which deductions are taken. Employers with 10 or more employees, public employers included, must also print:
- Gross wages
- Net wages
- The rate of pay
- The number of hours worked in the pay period, when hours affect the wage calculation
A New Jersey pay stub may be delivered electronically unless the employee asks for paper. At hiring, employers must also tell workers their rate of pay and the regular payday, then give notice before either one changes.
Twice-a-Month Paydays and the Final Check
Under N.J.S.A. 34:11-4.2 wages must be paid at least twice each calendar month on regular paydays set in advance. Bona fide executive and supervisory staff can be paid monthly. A pay period may end no more than 10 working days before its payday. If payday falls on a day the workplace is closed, pay goes out the working day before.
Final wages follow N.J.S.A. 34:11-4.3. Whether the worker is fired, laid off or quits, everything owed is due by the regular payday for the pay period in which the job ended. That last New Jersey payroll stub should carry the same state lines as any other check.
$15.92 and the Other 2026 Wage Floors
| Worker group | Hourly minimum |
|---|---|
| Most employees | $15.92 |
| Seasonal and small employers (fewer than 6 employees) | $15.23 |
| Agricultural workers paid hourly or piece rate | $14.20 |
| Long-term care facility direct care staff | $18.92 |
| Tipped workers, cash wage | $6.05 (tip credit up to $9.87) |
If a tipped worker's cash wage plus tips falls short of $15.92 the employer pays the difference. Overtime is 1.5 times the regular hourly rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, with exemptions for executive, administrative and professional employees.
Earned Sick Leave and Newark's Employer Payroll Tax
Employers of every size must provide earned sick leave at one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours per benefit year. Employers can front-load the full 40 hours instead of tracking accrual. Up to 40 unused hours carry over. Sick time that is used must be paid in the same or the next pay period at the regular rate.
Newark charges a 1% payroll tax on wages for services performed in the city. The employer calculates it and pays it to Newark, so it is an employer cost rather than part of the state withholding described above.
Building a Stub for a New Jersey Employer
- Enter the employer's name and address and choose New Jersey as the work state.
- Add the pay rate, hours and pay frequency, then the pay dates so the year-to-date columns fill in.
- Preview the result, check each state line against payroll and download the PDF.
The New Jersey paystub generator handles the caps for you. Staff who work across state lines may need another page: New Hampshire has no wage tax, so the New Hampshire paystub generator shows federal lines only. The same applies to the Nevada paystub generator, while the Missouri paystub generator adds its own state income tax. Every other state is listed in the state pay stub directory.
Responsible Use of Garden State Pay Records
Pay stubs should reflect wages that were actually earned and paid. Use them to run real payroll, replace a lost stub or support an application with bank records and a W-2. Making or altering income documents to mislead a lender, landlord or government agency is fraud under New Jersey and federal law.
New Jersey Commuters on Both Sides of the Rivers
New Jersey withholds state tax plus disability and family leave insurance. It has a reciprocal agreement with Pennsylvania and sends many workers to New York.
- Camden County residents who work in Philadelphia file Pennsylvania's REV-419 for reciprocity, though Philadelphia's wage tax still applies. The Pennsylvania paystub generator covers that side.
- Hudson County residents who work in Manhattan pay New York tax and New York paid family leave on that pay. Use the New York paystub generator.
- Salem County workers who cross to Wilmington owe Delaware tax and the city wage tax; see the Delaware paystub generator.
